Groundbreaking Work

As the leaves turn to Fall in our hometown of Akron, our I PROMISE students, families and partners continue to work hard and make good things happen for our community and beyond.

Just blocks away from the I PROMISE School, this week we broke ground on our latest project, I PROMISE Housing. Designed and developed in partnership with East Akron Neighborhood Development Corp., I PROMISE Housing will provide 50 units of 2,3, and 4-bedroom apartments for longer-term, affordable housing available for I PROMISE families. With Ms. Gloria James joining our partners and city leaders for this ceremonial groundbreaking, we can’t wait to see this lot turned into a safe and thriving space for our families.

For our oldest I PROMISE students, Fall means preparing for their next step that can include a full scholarship to either The University of Akron or Kent State University. To help them stay on track towards achieving eligibility, LJFF recently hosted Scholarship Night to provide a check list of things to stay on top of while also answering any questions they may have along the way on their groundbreaking journeys.

Speaking of the journey, our I PROMISE movement is taking a big step forward with our full I PROMISE documentary debuting on YouTube. Now available globally for the very first time, this feature length film shares the learnings and lessons from year one at the I PROMISE School, sharing how far we’ve come in our work to create a new model for urban, public education.

And on National Family Day this week, we welcomed the Cash App to our ever-growing I PROMISE family, with the app matching all donations made with our new Cash Tag ($LJFamFoundation) up to $100K. The work is never done here in Akron and 100% of the donations will go towards our wraparound supports for our I PROMISE families and our mission of redefining community.
